Abstract
Methemoglobinemia is a condition characterized by the increased oxidation of heme iron to the ferric (Fe3+) form. Methemoglobin normality composes less than 2 percent of hemoglobin in healthy adult and it is uncapable to carrying oxygen. The cause of methemoglobinemia may be hereditary or acquired, the latter resulting from application of common oxidizing agents such as benzocaine. A 10 year old children developed methemoglobinemia secondary to benzocaine used for dental procedure. Methemoglobinemia is a rare but potentially fatal condition after exposure to routinely used drugs. Physicians should be aware of this complication for early diagnosis and treatment.
